Gintama is no doubt one very popular manga in Japan, even if the anime series was pretty much overshadowed in the west by more prominently known Shonen Jump titles. But its story and setting made for an easier transition from 2d to live action and the movie has paid off well.
With over a million tickets sold at its opening week, its 3-episode live action show on Docomo's dTV streaming channel has also set a record for the move viewed show this year.
Yūichi Fukuda (live-action HK/Hentai Kamen, Mr. Nietzsche in the Convenience Store) directed the film and penned the script. The film stars Shun Oguri as Gintoki Sakata, Masaki Suda as Shinpachi Shimura, and Kanna Hashimoto as Kagura.
