A sequel of one of the more obscured sleeper hit JRPG titles, Toukiden 2 was released in Japan last summer in 2016. The North American western release came out this week now available on cross platform for the Sony PS4, PS Vita & PC via Steam.
In Toukiden 2, you play the role of a mysterious Slayer character who just woke up from a ten-year coma in the land called Otherworld full of monsters. The map of Otherworld is divided into six sections called Ages which are somewhat reminiscent of actual Japanese history.
The Slayer has to fight off the soul-devouring Oni alongside other Slayers from around the world in the game’s rich online environment. Interestingly, to increase the open-world-ish feature of the game, players from different gaming platforms can play on the same server.
Toukiden also has an fresh take on world designs and game mechanics as well. Some of the Oni monster designs for instance has some noticeable features typically found in “Western” style of lore. But it also shows up on the characters as well. Giving what most JRPG gamers love about Japanese RPG games, the artistic combination of Eastern & Western cultures.
“Two series-first weapon types make their debut in Toukiden 2: the sword and shield, a combination offering a solid blend of offense and defense, and the chain whip, which allows for fast-paced maneuvers that can quickly tear apart Oni flesh. Each armament can be used for light and heavy attacks alike, and each offers special abilities that can be combined with a versatile, world-bending tool known as the Demon Hand to balance the scales of power when battling Oni.”
Toukiden 2 already shipped in Europe March 24, 2017 for the PS4, PS Vita, and PC. The game is also available physically to purchase as a collector’s edition set.
The game will ship in Europe on March 24 for the same gaming platforms. The game will be available physically and digitally in both regions for PS4 and PS Vita, and via Steam for PC.
